Escape Masters is an arcade game for Android about prisoners escaping from prison, where the path to freedom lies through underground tunnels, unexpected obstacles and a perilous chase. The character gradually charts a route to the outside, helps other prisoners escape from their cells and uses the resources they’ve gathered to prepare for the next escape.
Escape Masters features
- Digging a tunnel beneath the prison: the direction of the tunnel is chosen manually, and mistakes can lead the hero straight into the hands of the guards or into a dangerous trap.
- Rescuing other prisoners. Freed characters join the group and help increase the reward for a successful escape.
- Collect coins and useful items whilst navigating the underground sections.
- Chase after escaping from prison: vehicles and the timely use of available options help you shake off your pursuers.
- Developing your team and improving your escape conditions using the resources you’ve earned.
- Short gameplay episodes that are easy to play in separate sessions without having to immerse yourself in the storyline for too long.
Game advantages
- Intuitive controls get you into the gameplay quickly: the main focus is on choosing a safe route and reacting to obstacles.
- The mechanics combine tunnelling with escape and pursuit, so playing isn’t reduced to a single repetitive action.
- Mistakes are easy to spot from what’s happening on screen, and retrying allows you to test a different route straight away.
- Gradually rescuing your fellow prisoners creates an additional objective alongside your own escape.
- The vibrant, cartoonish presentation is well-suited to short gaming sessions and doesn’t clutter the screen with unnecessary details.
The game’s shortcomings
- After several playthroughs, the sequence of events may start to feel familiar: the tunnel, the escape from prison and the chase all follow a pattern you’ve already mastered.
- The arcade-style physics allows for some leeway, so the behaviour of vehicles and certain obstacles doesn’t always feel realistic.
- If you choose the wrong route, you’ll have to restart part of the attempt, which can be frustrating when replaying similar sections.
- The game is designed for short sessions and does not feature a complex storyline with branching consequences based on your decisions.
