Snake '97 Retro Phone Classic — an arcade game for Android that recreates the gameplay of ‘Snake’ from button-operated mobile phones. On the game screen, the snake moves in straight lines, consuming objects as they appear and growing in size after each successful move. The controls are based on changing direction, so a short game quickly turns into a test of your reaction times and your ability to plan your route in advance.
Features of Snake '97 retro phone classic
- The retro design mimics the screen of an old mobile phone: the black-and-green colour scheme and pixel art capture the distinctive look of early mobile games.
- The gameplay retains the classic rules: the snake grows as it collects items, and colliding with the edge of the playing area or its own tail ends the attempt.
- The virtual controls are optimised for Android touchscreens and require no complicated setup before starting a game.
- Various theme options allow you to choose a style that evokes the specific era of push-button mobile phones, rather than modern arcade games with 3D graphics.
- Short gaming sessions are ideal for travelling or a quick break between tasks: the game doesn’t take long to get the hang of, and a single mistake immediately reveals why you’ve lost.
Advantages of the game
- The authentic visual style is more than just window dressing: the limited colour palette and chequered grid make every move easy to follow, even on a small screen.
- Simple rules mean you can start a game without any training, but as the snake grows longer, the safe paths gradually narrow, keeping the tension high.
- The controls aren’t overloaded with buttons, so your focus stays on the route and choosing the right moment to turn.
- Each playthrough is short and the game is well suited to those looking for a low-key arcade game without a storyline, complex menus or a lengthy playthrough.
- The retro style isn’t just a random collection of pixelated effects: the design is directly inspired by classic mobile phones and the mechanics of the original ‘Snake’.
Drawbacks of the arcade game
- The gameplay deliberately replicates the old ‘Snake’, so after a few rounds, there are no new rules, story-driven objectives or unexpected in-game events.
- The monochrome design and minimalist sounds may seem too simple to those accustomed to vibrant, modern arcade games with sophisticated visuals.
- On a touchscreen, turning requires precise timing: an accidental tap or the wrong direction can end the game, especially when the tail takes up most of the screen.
- The game’s appeal lies almost entirely in short, repeatable runs. Snake ’97 retro phone classic is of limited suitability for a long playthrough or for gradually unlocking content.
