Sky Force is a fast-paced top-down arcade shooter for Android, in which a fighter aircraft navigates vertically scrolling levels whilst under heavy enemy fire. The game combines short missions with gradual progression: destroying enemy aircraft earns you stars, whilst completing missions unlocks upgrades for your weapons and defences.
Sky Force features
Each level turns into an aerial operation with a changing pace. At first, the aircraft fights its way through small groups of enemies, then faces more dangerous aircraft and large bosses. Manoeuvres require precision: the screen quickly fills with projectiles, so a safe position changes almost every second.
- The aircraft controls are designed for a touchscreen: swiping with your finger helps you dodge fire whilst keeping the aircraft within the attack zone.
- Your primary weapon can be upgraded using collected resources, boosting the aircraft’s effectiveness on subsequent missions.
- Throughout the levels, you’ll encounter civilians who need to be rescued, rather than simply flying past them to maintain a faster pace.
- Missions offer additional objectives, so you can replay the same stage using different tactics.
- Temporary power-ups help you get through a tricky section or quickly close the distance to the boss.
Advantages of the game
- The arcade mechanics are easy to get to grips with: a single flight is perfect for a quick break, whilst the upgrades you’ve earned keep you coming back for more.
- Upgrading your aircraft changes how familiar levels feel: once your weapons are upgraded, you can tackle previous waves of enemies with greater confidence, though mistakes are still punished.
- Boss battles require you to memorise attack patterns, rather than just keeping your finger on the screen.
- The system of optional side missions encourages careful play and rescuing people, rather than mindlessly destroying everything in sight.
- The vertical orientation works well on a smartphone: the battlefield remains in full view, and the controls do not obscure key areas of the screen.
Drawbacks of the arcade shooter
- You’ll need to replay levels to build up resources, so progress can slow down if your current level of upgrades isn’t sufficient for a challenging stage.
- A heavy barrage of projectiles can sometimes mean defeat comes down to a single mistake, particularly during boss fights.
- Missions with strict conditions force you to revisit levels you’ve already completed, which won’t appeal to every fan of linear progression.
- Touch controls do not always offer the same precision as physical buttons: a sudden movement of your finger can easily send the aircraft onto a dangerous trajectory.
