Materializr is a specialized CAD editor for Windows designed to create and develop three-dimensional models from sheet materials. The program is intended for designing structures where not only the shape of the object matters, but also the composition of its parts: elements can be treated as separate blanks, assigned dimensions, and assembled into a complete model.

Materializr can be viewed as a more narrowly focused alternative to FreeCAD. FreeCAD is designed for a wide range of engineering tasks and offers different workbenches for parametric modeling, whereas Materializr focuses on designing objects from materials and visually checking the resulting structure. This makes the program less versatile, but its approach is better suited to the preliminary design of items, furniture, and other assembled products.

Materializr Features

  • Creating three-dimensional structures from separate elements with specified dimensions.
  • Working with materials as part of the model rather than merely as visual surface treatments.
  • Editing part parameters to quickly adjust the width, height, and thickness of blanks.
  • Assembling multiple elements into a single object with the ability to evaluate their relative positions in space.
  • Viewing the project in a three-dimensional scene, helping identify intersecting parts and geometric errors before production.
  • Using the project as the basis for preparing a structure made from real sheet materials.
  • Open source code that allows users to study the application’s design and adapt it to their own needs.

Materializr is useful at the stage when an idea has already gone beyond a sketch but has not yet become a finished product: a three-dimensional model helps verify dimensions and understand how separate blanks will connect to one another.

Advantages of the CAD Editor

  • Subject-specific focus: the program is designed for structures made from materials, so design is not reduced to drawing arbitrary geometry.
  • A clear representation of parts in an overall assembly makes it easier to inspect the future product without producing a prototype.
  • The parametric approach simplifies making changes: adjusting an element’s dimensions makes it possible to revise the entire structure more quickly.
  • A simpler workflow compared with universal engineering CAD systems, where an equivalent task requires learning several specialized modules.
  • Open development makes Materializr appealing not only for design, but also to users who value code transparency and the ability to make improvements themselves.

Disadvantages

  • Its narrow specialization limits the program’s use to tasks involving structures made from materials; complex mechanical engineering design requires a more universal CAD system.
  • Materializr does not replace a complete manufacturing suite: designing and checking a model does not mean that all machine operations are prepared automatically.
  • Using the program requires independently learning its domain-specific logic and the principles of building assemblies.
  • An open project may lag behind commercial CAD solutions in the completeness of its documentation, the number of ready-made tools, and the maturity of user support.

Materializr is particularly suitable for scenarios where a digital structure must first be assembled from separate blanks, its proportions checked, and only then should cutting or manufacturing begin. Its capabilities may be insufficient for complex parts requiring engineering calculations.

Materializr was developed for those who need a clear, specialized tool for designing structures from sheet materials without switching to an overloaded universal CAD system. It helps turn a set of dimensions and separate parts into a clear three-dimensional model, and it is distributed free of charge.

What's new in the latest version 1.7.2

Updated

  • A panel for precise input of displacement along the X, Y, and Z axes in the current measurement units has been added to the move tool. Entered values are not rounded to the grid, and the operation is saved in history just like a regular move.
  • Precise rotation is now available for individual bodies, sketches, and simultaneously selected sketches and bodies. The angle can be entered numerically, changed before exiting the tool, applied as a difference only, and the last operation can be undone with a separate button.
  • Measurements are now displayed when using the selection tool. Lines show their length, circles show their diameter and radius, and arcs show their radius, angle, and arc length. When multiple segments are selected, their total length is also displayed.
  • In the operation history and the align-to-plane tool, the axes are now labeled in the same way as on the view cube. The names of the target planes have been changed to “XY Base”, “XZ”, and “YZ”, making model orientation easier.
  • The interface translation catalog has been expanded: strings have been added for notifications, constraints, the AI assistant, fix and stitch dialogs, sketch offsetting, and other program elements.
  • Freezes when working with long traced contours and splines with many control points have been eliminated. Curve construction has been optimized, and heavy bodies are now processed in the background.
  • A sketch opened for editing only is now restored after a crash. State snapshots are created for such projects, and the completion of editing is saved until the temporary data is deleted.
  • Mesh generation for elongated and trimmed walls has been accelerated. STL export for models with many elements, such as models with engraved letters, is now significantly faster, and reopening such projects takes less time.
  • Validation of body unions with large surfaces built on B-splines has been fixed: valid operations are no longer rejected due to inaccurate volume estimation.
  • Sketch snapping to edges has been improved: chain tracking continues after the first point, and parallel and perpendicular guides no longer lock the cursor across the entire grid cell.
  • The move and rotate manipulator now works correctly when a sketch is selected before a body.
  • Fixed an issue with a duplicated body rotation button, swapped Y and Z axis colors in the sketch rotation, scaling, and move panels, as well as the missing progress indicator when cutting from bodies with many faces.
